Right of Way Rules in Kenya

Right of way determines who goes first at intersections, junctions, and other conflict points on Kenyan roads. Misunderstanding these rules is a major cause of accidents, especially at uncontrolled junctions in towns like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru.

At a junction without traffic lights or signs, give way to vehicles approaching from your right. This applies to T-junctions and crossroads alike. If you are on a minor road joining a major road (like joining Thika Road from a side street), you must always give way to traffic on the major road.

When turning, always give way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians who are already crossing the road you want to enter. At a roundabout, give way to traffic already in the roundabout (from your right). Emergency vehicles with sirens and flashing lights always have right of way, so pull to the left and stop to let them pass.
