Pedestrian Safety in Kenya

Pedestrians account for a large share of road fatalities in Kenya. According to NTSA data, nearly 40% of road deaths involve pedestrians. This makes pedestrian safety a critical topic for every driver and road user.

As a driver, you are legally required to give way to pedestrians at marked crossings (zebra crossings). In Nairobi, key zebra crossings on roads like Kenyatta Avenue and Moi Avenue are often ignored, but failing to stop is an offence. Slow down near bus stops where passengers alight from matatus and may cross without looking.

As a pedestrian, always use footpaths where they exist. Cross at designated crossing points. On roads without footpaths (common on roads like Waiyaki Way and Jogoo Road), walk facing oncoming traffic so you can see approaching vehicles. At night, wear bright or reflective clothing. Never assume a driver has seen you.

Key Rules

  • 1Drivers must stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings
  • 2Slow down near bus stops, schools, and markets
  • 3Pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic when no footpath exists
  • 4At night, pedestrians should wear reflective or bright clothing
  • 5Never overtake a vehicle that has stopped at a pedestrian crossing
