Driving Licence Classes in Kenya (A to G)

Kenya has seven driving licence classes, A to G, each covering specific vehicle types. Class A is motorcycles and three-wheelers, Class B is light vehicles up to 3,500 kg (ordinary cars, the most common class), Class C is trucks and goods vehicles, and Class D is public service vehicles such as matatus and buses. Classes E, F, and G cover professional endorsements, drivers with disability, and industrial or construction plant.

You apply online through eCitizen (NTSA). You will need your national ID, KRA PIN, passport photos, and a medical certificate from an approved doctor. The path is: get the medical certificate, apply for a provisional driving licence (PDL), enrol in an NTSA-licensed driving school, then pass the theory test and the practical test before your full licence is issued.

A provisional driving licence is valid for three months and can be renewed for further three-month periods (Rule 27(5), Legal Notice 28 of 2020). While learning you must display L-plates on the front and rear, and a "CAUTION - DRIVER UNDER INSTRUCTION" notice visible from at least 20 metres. You must be accompanied by a driving instructor or a qualified driver holding a valid licence for that class, and you may not carry passengers for hire. A full Kenyan driving licence is valid for three years and is renewable.
